The Rumba Kings

The Rumba Kings

Friday, September 22 @ 9:00PMFri, Sep 22 @ 9:00PM

Mainstage Theatre, 216 Union Street, Seattle

Our new show resembles a Vegas production more than anything else. It's pure class. It's a night out at The Copacabana in the 40's. The ultimate get dressed-up and have a classy night out show.” - Johnny Bacolas

"Our goal is to take our audience on a trip around the Mediterranean." - George Stevens

KNKX 88.5 FM Presents The Rumba Kings featuring Arcobaleno Strings and special guest performers! Get dressed-up ready for two nights of the most passionate Mediterranean-inspired music imaginable, accompanied by a live performance that is the talk of the Pacific Northwest! Catch the band in our intimate theater before they ascend to international status! Their new single, "Dance with me" is being praised and shared by top radio personality, Delilah, on her social media. Seattle's KNKX has been a proud supporter of their live shows and music from the beginning.

The name, "The Rumba Kings" can be deceiving. While the band plays several rumba-style songs (think Gipsy Kings), this is by no means solely a rumba band. Quite the contrary. The Rumba Kings have a wide variety of influences in their music and live performances.

BLKBOK

Friday, September 15 @ 7:30PMFri, Sep 15 @ 7:30PM

Mainstage Theatre, 216 Union Street, Seattle

Born and raised in Detroit’s inner-city, BLKBOK (born Charles Wilson III), grew up in a music-filled house and by the time he was 8, BLKBOK was an acclaimed piano prodigy, winning statewide accolades and college-level competitions. When it came to music, most of the kids he grew up with pursued hip-hop, adopting rap names. However, it’s no coincidence that Charles chose the name BLKBOK, which echoes that of one of the greatest pianists and composers of all time. The tag is also an apt reflection of the elements that have contributed to the artist’s identity and symbolizes his colorful journey from pop and hip-hop culture to his critically acclaimed, neo-classical debut album Black Book, and various Mixtape projects and collaborations.

Ottmar Liebert & Luna Negra

Ottmar Liebert & Luna Negra

Tuesday, September 12 @ 7:30PMTue, Sep 12 @ 7:30PM

Mainstage Theatre, 216 Union Street, Seattle

Ottmar Liebert’s global success can be attributed to a myriad of things – his creative vision, his determination, and a strong sense of melody. Born in Cologne, Germany, he began playing guitar at 11. Before the age of 19, Liebert had intended to stay in Germany and pursue a career as a designer and photographer. However, while journeying extensively through Asia and playing with other travelers and local musicians, he realised that he could not escape a life of music. After pursuing his dreams of playing rock music in Boston, he settled in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Santa Fe was a fresh start for Liebert in many ways and in addition to returning to the acoustic guitar, he remained open to letting the place define the music he made. It was this openness to the local landscape that defined what was to become his musical style, a mix of Spanish, Mexican and World elements, strong melodies tinged with a shade of melancholy, balanced with upbeat rhythms.

Shawn Mullins

Thursday, September 7 @ 8:30PMThu, Sep 7 @ 8:30PM

Mainstage Theatre, 216 Union Street, Seattle

After a series of indie releases and growing buzz in the Atlanta music scene, Shawn Mullins’ critical and commercial breakthrough came when 1998 Soul’s Core shot him to fame on the strength of Grammy-nominated No. 1 hit, “Lullaby” followed by AAA/Americana No. 1 hit “Beautiful Wreck” from 2006’s 9th Ward Pickin’ Parlor. His song, “Shimmer” was used in promotion of the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney and was included on the Dawson’s Creek soundtrack. His co-write “All in My Head” from 2008’s Honeydew was featured in episode one of the hit TV sitcom “Scrubs.” Mullins also co-wrote the Zac Brown Band’s No. 1 country tune “Toes.” In early 2002, he formed super group The Thorns with Matthew Sweet and Pete Droge. “No Blue Sky” from the resulting album, is a modern day classic. For the 20th anniversary of his breakthrough album, Shawn revisited the music of Soul’s Core by recording two new versions of the album. He calls this Soul’s Core Revival. This is not a remix or a remaster of the original, but rather brand new recordings with new arrangements of the songs – one album is stripped down solo performances, some on guitar, some on piano and maybe one a cappella and the second is a new studio recording with his full band, Soul Carnival.

Sue Foley & Zan Fiskum

Sue Foley & Zan Fiskum

Wednesday, September 6 @ 7:00PMWed, Sep 6 @ 7:00PM

Mainstage Theatre, 216 Union Street, Seattle

PINKY’S BLUES, is named after Sue Foley’s pink paisley Fender Telecaster electric guitar that has been such a major part of Foley’s life for all these years. Part of that is the total devotion Sue Foley has to the guitar, and in particular to the one she calls Pinky that has been with her for decades and continues to play on this album. Foley feels it’s almost a living extension of who she is and helps guide her through the rambunctiously deep renditions of everything she performs.

The open-flow feel of the great empty spaces of Texas that blows through many of the songs, no matter whether they’re previous classics like Lavelle White’s “Stop These Teardrops,” Frankie Lee Sims’ “Boogie Real Low” or Jimmy Donley’s “Think It Over” or newer songs like Angela Strehli’s “Two Bit Texas Town” and Foley’s own “Dallas Man.” Sue Foley had an overall idea for how she wanted the music to be. “We just wanted to make something representative of the Texas blues that we had been schooled on in Austin. So, we picked great songs and I wrote a few of my own to round things out. Everything on it is a labor of love.”

On PINKY’S BLUES, Sue Foley’s well-loved guitar is stepping up and stepping out, playing the music of the spheres and sharing a love for something so deep and so pure there are no words to truly describe it. Though Foley tries: “I’ve been on the road for over 30 years. You could call that paying my dues. I’ve made over a dozen albums of my own. I’ve raised a child. I’ve bought and sold homes. I’ve had great successes and great failures. And all of this just makes my life richer and more colorful. It’s funny I keep coming back to the same 30 or 40 albums as my place of inspiration. I keep studying the same artists, over and over again. Freddie King, Muddy Waters, Memphis Minnie, T-Bone Walker, Howlin’ Wolf, etc...etc.,... You never really get there. You’re just always going. But it’s a great trip and I never get tired of playing a slow blues. That’s the ultimate.” Today, in 2021, Sue Foley is surely one of the ultimate. With Pinky right by her side.
