125 w/ Retic and Miles Tilmann

Genre: Electronica , Experimental

125 welcomes 2 fantastic artists for July's 125:

Retic and Miles Tilmann

Retic's college curriculum consisted of music theory and composition, as well as the technical stuff: Recording, computer music, acoustics, C-sound, and Max. This was a launching point for the creation of sequenced, computer-based music.

After an extended period creating several works that were never officially released to the public, Douglas self-released 2 discs in 2007. They are SATURN DAY TRAJECTORY and Saturn's sister release, an ambient work called COLOR IS A WEIRD WORD. A third LP was released in 2009, entitled SOMNOLENT MASSIVE, and new music awaits in 2010.

Melodic/glitchy/ambient/breakbeat/electro/IDM/otherwise unclassifiable electronic listening music, introspective and atmospheric harmonies accompanied by a mish-mash of subtle and occasionally pummeling rhythmic sounds/structures. Retic is Douglas Teike, originally from Indianapolis and currently residing in Seattle.

125: An eve of Mid/Down-Tempo with the regions top talent

Genre: Electronica , Experimental

125 (fourth Wed/mo.) is built on the premise that mid-tempo electronic music leads a vagabond existence in Seattle, without a shelter to call home. Thus, 125 is committed to furnishing a permanent nest to sophisticated electronic textures that you won't find at regular local club events. The west coast is fertile ground for slower electronic music, with Seattle being the home for many internationally recognized mid-tempo producers, and still we have yet to see consistent events showcasing these sounds.

Dj introcut is member of the FOURTHCITY CREW (SEA)... Intro's been playin records for over 12 years...Matt spins many different stylezzz of music, hiphop, downtempo, glitch, future, electronic, brokenbeat, house, techno, soul, dub, dancehall, dubstep, electro, 80s/90s, space funk, PUNK, metal, jazz etc... Earshot Jazz Festival Presents: Natacha Atlas

Genre: Electronica , Experimental , World

  1. Tuesday, November 02 7:30 PM (All ages)

Musically and geographically, Natacha Atlas has always been an itinerant. The Anglo-Egyptian singer has spent more than a decade fusing electronic beats with North African and Arabic music, finding links between seemingly disparate musical genres, exploring new and different sonic settings and working with a wealth of like-minded collaborators from across the world along the way. The resulting body of work is both a triumph of true multiculturalism and a testament to the richness and accessibility of Arabic culture. It is, indeed, an oeuvre unlike any other. Presiding over it all, of course, is Atlas’s extraordinary voice. Meltingly sensuous and gloriously passionate, delicate with melisma and microtones, it bridges Middle Eastern and Western styles with instinctive ease.

MORITZ VON OSWALD TRIO - Live : Berlin

Basic Channel / Honest Jon's Recordings

http://www.dbfestival.com/moritz-von-oswald-trio

The Moritz von Oswald Trio brings together acclaimed artists Moritz von Oswald [Basic Channel], Max Loderbauer [Sun Electric, NSI], and Vladislav Delay [aka Luomo, Uusitalo] in a unique live performance project. The three, each pioneers in Berlin’s early 90s electronic music scene, meld their varied approaches and shared history into a reinvention of dub-electronica: the new project is an exploration of the possibilities inherent in live, collaborative improvisation, with Von Oswald playing electro-acoustics, Loderbauer on analogue synthesizers, and Vladislav Delay again taking up drums, his original instrument, to play metal percussion.

In a fascinating extension of previous work, the trio exploits slow tempos to establish an ‘endless groove’; a funk-like de-emphasis on melody and harmony that puts the rhythmic pulse of percussion in the foreground. They develop grooves into a series of extended vamps layered with electronics and suspended synth tones to weave gliding, deconstructed techno from their live performances. MvOT keeps their base rhythms in constant flux, leaning towards hybrid fusions of afrobeat and electronica. They play with a tribal egalitarianism; the kind of musical democracy celebrated by Can – an equality that creates space for multi-directional freedom – that gives the trio’s music a hypnotic, rarefied quality.

Moritz von Oswald has long been a lynchpin in electronic music. Collaborating with Thomas Fehlmann and later with Mark Ernestus as co-founder of Basic Channel, he was instrumental in establishing the Berlin-Detroit techno connection. Von Oswald also co-initiated the sub-labels Chain Reaction, Main Street, Burial Mix, Basic Replay and Rhythm&Sound, and is ever present behind the scenes, mixing and mastering the likes of Tony Allen among countless others on both major labels and independent imprints such as Carl Craig’s Planet E. Long time friend and collaborator, Max Loderbauer, also has a long, behind the scenes production history going back to the early Tresor scene in Berlin. He is best known as one half of Sun Electric, and more recently as one half of NSI with Tobias Freund, creating experimental dance music and avant piano/electronic pieces.

Vladislav Delay’s earliest releases appeared on Chain Reaction in the mid 90s. After starting out as a jazz drummer, Delay developed no less three distinct production identities and went on to disrupt accepted notions of live electronic music performance in house music and techno while plumbing deeply personal territory. Delay is also involved with performance projects The Dolls, with Craig Armstrong and AGF, and his own, recently debuted, Vladislav Delay Quartet with Mika Vainio [Pan Sonic], and jazz musicians Derek Shirley and Lucio Capece. An MvOT album is planned for later this year.

VLADISLAV DELAY - Live : Berlin

Chain Reaction / Mille Plateaux / Ruume Recordings

http://www.dbfestival.com/vladislav-delay

Vladislav Delay (aka Uusitalo, Luomo, Conoco, Sistol) is a master of modern electronic music of many types. Under a raft of different names this Finnish artist (born 1976 Sasu Ripatti) has experimented with ambient, broken beat, glitch as well as grooves and house music with soulful vocals. In addition he has collaborated with and worked for a wide range of artists ranging from Scissor Sisters and Craig Armstrong to AGF, Black Dice, Massive Attack, Towa Tei and Ryuichi Sakamoto. While his side-projects and remixes are there to flirt with more stable rhythms and dancefloor institutions, his main love as well as his background is in experimenting with different kind of sounds and rhythms; a quest to find some music not heard yet.

SANSO-XTRO - Live : South Australia

Type Recordings / Digitalis

http://www.dbfestival.com/sanso-xtro

sanso-xtro is Melissa Agate. Born and raised in Adelaide, Australia, Melissa is a multi-instrumentalist who makes a kind of alien folk music with a variety of electronic and acoustic instruments. She is no newcomer to the experimental music scene, being exposed very early in life as the drummer of Australian avant-rock outfit Sindog Jellyroll. Since then she has refined her styles and perfected what she believes to be a genuinely personal sound.

Finding herself discontented with the trappings of the rock genre, it was not long before Agate discovered electronic music and began to experiment with as many different instruments as she could manage to acquire. From acoustic guitar and ukulele to traditional bells and kalimba, anything at hand was added to the rich soundscape of her creative vision. In doing this, Melissa has created something truly original; accessible but very difficult to define in genre. Her debut album ‘Sentimentalist’ was released on Type Records (UK) in 2005. Inspired by her antipodean background, marsupials, sunrise, sunset, heatwaves and also from a life-changing move to British shores, ‘Sentimentalist’ is deeply reflective and unashamedly visual. Subtle analogue experimentation and brave acoustic instrumentation combine and converge equally.

Agate’s influences are as far reaching as her musical ambition, and she takes well-informed references from avant-jazz, blues and experimental electronic works. Moments on her recorded output project hazy echoes of Robert Johnson, before colliding with the sublime analogue chic of Stereolab or Broadcast. Elsewhere, skeletal outlines of Opiate or Mum drift into angular rhythmical sounds explored by Supersilent or Radian. Yet rather than try and emulate another artist, instead Agate takes ideas to add to her ever changing musical ideal. It is her goal to produce an honest sound, something that is true to her soul, and she succeeds magnificently.

After a seven year stay in London, sanso-xtro leaped back to South Australia for a short while to reconnect, swim in the Southern Ocean and awake to the sound of kookaburras whilst writing and recording her second album. Carefully selected fragments of musical history are lovingly woven together creating a magical album, and one not to be taken lightly under any circumstances.
