On September 1st 2009, recent NYC transplants Das Vibenbass, will issue their hotly anticipated release, Don’t Forget Where The Sun Sets. The fourth album from the once Seattle jazz outfit, marks the beginning of cutting edge songwriting uniting rock and experimentation into a jazz tapestry of sonic fulfillment. This conceptual re- cording is a step in a bold direction of expression within the quartet...that of time and space, tension and release, pain and pleasure. Don’t Forget Where The Sun Sets, also marks an exciting first for the band, as the album co-exists with a comic book, combining medias to bring an encompassing audio/visual experience to the listener. This one of a kind landmark within the jazz community is what sets Das Vibenbass apart as forerunners in true expression and creativity.
The album follows the last day in the life of one Elliot Pro- totype. This once great writer; launched into fame and fortune by his best selling novel Don’t Forget Where the Sun Sets, Has fallen into desolation and despair. Haunt- ed by the loss of his one true love and the Monster that is the city, you follow this man’s descent into madness. Elliot’s dreams bring him to some of the most beautiful places ever imagined. But reality thrashes back, forcing him into darkness. Aided by his typewriter and his many vices, Elliot takes a journey that would be a whirlwind of emotions for any person.
In the past year Das has been shifting gears within its music and pushing themselves to focus on composition- ally based songwriting. It has seen them become much more lyrically grounded with the ability to paint giant can- vases of sound. Imagine seeing a movie score created on stage with the ability to aurally induce strong emo- tions. You can anticipate hearing DVB progress from beautiful passages to dissonant and harsh periods all within a single piece. They have been dubbed “dirty jazz” and regarded by many as an important voice that will help to reshape the ever-changing genre of jazz. They were nominated for Best Jazz/Experimental act in the Seattle Weekly’s ‘Best of 2006’. With constant tours of the United States, Germany, Austria and the Czech Re- public, the group has accumulated a devoted fan base, spanning many ages, many countries and many tastes.
